Life is change.

You know this. You’ve experienced transitions from childhood to adolescence to adulthood, each with its unique challenges and gifts. You attended school. Built relationships and ended them. Perhaps you got married, bought a house, started a family. You moved. You earned a living. You experienced both good times and not so good times. And you carried on.

Now once again, you find your self in transition.  You’re in your 50’s or 60’s or more and reality hits. You are getting older!

Your body feels a bit stiffer.  Books need to be held farther and farther away to make reading “the fine print” possible.  You walk into a room only to wonder, “Now why did I come in here?”

Maybe you’re retired or about to be. You ask yourself whether it’s time to downsize? Find an encore career? Travel? Volunteer?

At times you feel as disoriented as a stranger in a strange land.

It’s the culmination of all that you’ve experienced so far. It can be sobering when you realize that the distant future may no longer be so distant as it was when you were 30. Who will you be and what will you do?

Remember this, the quality of your aging experience depends on you. And the choice is yours: Are you going to muddle through the rest of your life, becoming “old” and curmudgeonly? Or are you going to face aging’s inevitable changes – whatever they are for you – with all the grace and humor you can muster, living life to the fullest?
